Make an Origami Cat-Box for Halloween

Have you ever seen a cat who has a rabbit as a close relative? Well, this particular origami cat is genetically related to an origami rabbit featured in a previous blog post here at Origami Spirit. They share the same origami genes!

Just like its rabbit cousin, this origami cat is also made from the well known “waterbomb base”. Both of these models are inflatable, and can also be used as festive boxes to fill with delicious little holiday yummies.

While the origami rabbit is perfect for Easter, the cat is better suited to Halloween and gives us a strong hint of the bats, owls, witches, Jack-o’-lanterns, scarecrows, colorful costumes and boxes full of sweet treats seen everywhere during this season.

The first version of the origami cat had no eyes but with just a few extra folds I was able to give this Halloween cat a spooky and penetrating gaze! This cat-box model is one I know you’ll love!

Here is the video tutorial to make the origami cat.

Tips and suggestions to make this Halloween origami cat

  • Use paper 6 x 6 inches or larger, white on one side and black on the other.
  • Thin paper like “Kami” known in the US as “origami paper” works well, but a little thicker paper is even better.
  • You can use paper which is black on both sides. And for the color change on the eyes, use a white oil pastel to color the reverse side of the tips of the paper.
  • You can experiment and modify the last folds to make variations of the eyes. In the video you’ll learn how to make a variation that makes the cat look quite spooky!

  1. Hi Leyla,
I love the cat head box very much. It’s very useful and I love them a lot. Can you please film a video tutorial on a whole cat head and body multi-use origami box? Will really appreciate it!!!!

  2. Hi Leyla,
Thanks for helping to make my trip to the PCOC a fun time. It was very cool to have lunch with you, your class was awesome, and I treasure my tiny chili pepper and my brand new bamboo folding tools. They work so very well!

    Cheers,
    Rebecca
