Inflatable Origami Heart from the Mexican Origami Convention

I love origami hearts. Learning this inflatable origami heart (by Jeremy Shafer) was one of my personal highlights at the 3rd International Origami Convention in Mexico City. (Nov 14-16, 2014).

This heart symbolizes how much I loved my visit to Mexico City. I was not only honored at being one of the convention special guests, along with Jeremy Shafer, but was lucky in having Jeremy show me how to make his heart model. I was also able to make a video of the folding process along with Jeremy. And here it is for you at Origami Spirit. Thank you, Jeremy!

Tips and suggestions for making Jeremy’s origami heart

  • Many papers can be used to make this origami heart. In the video we use a paper known as “kami”
  • A 6×6-inch (15x15cm.) is perfect for learning this model.
  • The finished origami heart shows only one side of the paper. It’s not necessary to use paper with a different color on each side.
  • If you use paper of different color start with the color of the heart facing down.
  • The heart can be placed on top of a pencil.

Here I share in photos some other highlights of the wonderful Mexican convention 2014

Along with his origami-heart-making talents, I also discovered that Jeremy is an exceptional Salsa dancer!
My feet were a little rusty for salsa, but we danced together and had much fun.

In addition to attending the convention, I was also able to visit the magnificent Museum of Anthropology, the Plaza de la Constitución, the  Metropolitan Cathedral, the Templo Mayor, the Museo Nacional de Culturas Populares and the Museo Frida Khalo, which is located  in the lovely Coyoacán neighborhood.

Now that I’ve returned to the snowy cold Northeastern United States, my Mexican princess carriage has become a pumpkin and my crystal slippers thick winter boots. Thank you to all my dear folding friends who made this trip an unforgettable experience. I look forward to visiting Mexico again!

  3. Hello,

I’m curious what was being used to inflate the heart. My 8 year old and I will be making these for Valentine’s Day for her classmates. Thank you for the instructions!

    • Stefanie, the heart is inflated with the mouth… in the video, at the moment of blowing air into the heart, we just see the colorful cap that Jeremy was wearing, so it might be a little confusing.
