Easy Paper Box -It’s a Heart and a Diamond!

Traditional origami models can be excellent points of departure for creating new and ingenious paper figures. Many new models have their origin in a seemingly small change applied to an existing model.

This heart-shaped paper box is a wonderful example of this idea. The box is made by adding only a couple of folds to the traditional masu box, which is in itself simple and versatile.

This variation of the masu box is a creation of Romi Halabaso (Philippines). To make it we will fold two paper boxes –one box being the lid, and the other the base. The lid will have a diamond shape, and, when removed, will reveal the base of the box which will display the shape of a heart.

It’s a heart and a diamond, two in one,  perfect for a sweet Valentine’s day gift or as a Jewelry Box.

The following step-by-step video shows how to make Romi’s Heart-Diamond Box. Thank you Romi for granting permission to present your model in this video!

Tips and suggestions for making this paper box

  • In the video the heart-shaped box is demonstrated using thin kami paper, known in the U.S. as “origami paper”.
  • Other papers –office paper, gift-wrapping or paper from old magazines, are also suitable.
  • Only one side of the paper is visible on the finished model. It is not necessary to use paper of different color on each side.
  • Use a piece of paper 6×6 inches (15x15cm.) to learn it.
  • Make the lid in the same way as the base but use a square paper whose side is 1/32 bigger than the paper used for the base.

    • Great! I had indented both corners as well but didn’t show any photo of my result. I like that the boxes are somewhat modular and lent themselves to playing with different group-arrangements. Thank you for sharing your photos.
