Drop Everything and Make this Origami Dog!

Stop working! Stop browsing the Internet! Instead, fold this charming dog, now!  I’m serious! You’ll love it!!

From the kingdom of origami animals this is a really cute one, and is now, hands down, one of my favorite origami action models.

Have you seen Toy Story? Do you remember Slinky? Here in this model we have an origami version of this great classic toy.

I’ve taken my own advice and now my house is filled with little origami dachshunds, and my blog post is wagging exclamation marks everywhere, and at everyone. Fun! Fun! Fun!!!

Thanks to the generosity of my playful friend Yara Yagi (Brasil), who kindly shared her creation with me —and us, and allowed me to make this video tutorial.

And in case you haven’t realized just how enthusiastic I am about presenting this model, I’d just like to add that I have a line of videos to be made, but this charming dachshund cut right to the front. I just couldn’t wait to show this one here at Origami Spirit.

Tips and suggestions for making the origami dachshund

  • In the video, the dog is demonstrated using “Kami” paper, a thin paper made specially for origami.
  • All kinds of papers can be used to make this origami dachshund. Regular office paper would make good choices or printed pages from old magazines or books are perfect.
  • The finished paper dog shows mostly one side of the paper with color from the opposite side showing at the nose.
  • If you don’t have paper of different color on each side, at the end you can color the nose, if you want.
  • A good size to learn the model would be 6×6-inch (15×15cm).
  • This origami dog allows for many variations. Yara’s intention is for people to play with the proportion and look of the dog. For example, try making it out of rectangular paper as well as square. Two variations are shown in the video.
