One Origami Box, Three Variations

If you have been following this blog for a while, you may have noticed how much we love sharing origami boxes for all occasions. As with those previous box posts, I’m sure you’ll love this origami swirl box too!

Jannie van Schuylenburg* (Netherlands), shared two variations of her lovely creation with me:

  • One with a flower on its top -Swirl Hydrangea Box
  • One that looks like a snow-capped mountain -Mount Fuji

Jannie asked if I would make a video tutorial. After folding them I said yes, of course! This box by Jannie is both elegant and easy to make! To me the model also suggests another variation:

  • A Christmas tree!

Here is the video tutorial showing the three variations, along with a big ‘Thank You, Jannie!’ for sharing with all of us.

Tips and suggestions for making the swirl box

  • In the video, the box is demonstrated using kami paper, known in the US as Origami Paper, which is thin and crisp.
  • Different kind of papers can be used to make this origami box. “Tant” or regular office paper are good choices and might be better than the thinner kami paper.
  • The box shows both sides of the paper. For best effect, two of the variations, the flower and mount Fuji, require paper of different color on each side.
  • To make the tree, use paper of the same color on both sides.
  • A good size to learn the model would be 6×6-inch (15×15cm). Once you have practiced, you can use bigger or smaller squares of paper.
