How a Paper Heart can Help You Stay Healthy

Origami hearts are fun to make and can be used for many purposes: to express love on Valentine’s day; to give as a gift on mother’s day or father’s day, or for a sweetheart, or to make amends at whatever time of the year. Making hearts, and giving hearts from our hearts brings many health benefits to our mind, body, and soul.

Remarkably, a paper origami heart can even help us stay healthy!

An important part of education today is teaching children how to take good care of their health. During the 2016 OrigamiUSA convention at St. Johns University in Queens, NY, Dr. Sylvia Cerel-Suhl shared with me a lovely storigami using this origami heart.

In ten easy folding steps, she demonstrates three key ways of easily maintaining our heart health:  Let’s Move! Eat Right, and Don’t Smoke.

Tip for teachers and parents: As a bonus, folding this paper heart also reinforces some basic math and science concepts!

Please take a look at this video to learn how to make this heart* and more about Dr. Cerel Suhl’s health message. And remember: there is nothing more important than our health, especially to those who love us.

In addition to using origami to teach children how to stay healthy, Dr. Cerel-Suhl is pursuing an active campaign to collect one million paper hearts to help share this health message with as wide an audience as possible. Her campaign relates to the Million Heart Iniciative, an ambitious US goal to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes by 2017.

Please participate and send your paper hearts to KidsArt4Hearts, Suite 51, 153 Patchen Drive, Lexington, KY, 40517, USA. Click on The Million Heart Installation to see a sketch of the art made with contributed origami hearts collected from all locations.

* Simple origami creations may have been designed by different creators.  This origami heart was independently created by both Jannie van Schuylenburg and Sylvia Cerel-Suhl and is presented here with their permission.

  1. Hi Leyla,
You are the greatest! As I said before, you are truly spreading the Spirit of Origami! How great is to see a doctor folding and explaining the importance of heart health. I hope she succeeds in her quest to to save millions of lives. It is amazing how this art fits in so many facets of our lives. I hope teachers get on board with this. Doctors as well. This project is not only for grades K-12, it can also be taken to the college level. It is never too early or too late to start teaching the importance of good health.
