An Origami Flower Can Enhance a Gift or Be The Gift

This Hollyhock –or Malva Rosa, is a beautiful origami flower made from a pentagon.  IIt was created by Yara Yagi (Brazil) while she played with a five-sided piece of paper. Folding it has a pleasant rhythm and the resulting flower is lovely.

This origami flower can be used to enhance a present, or be a gift all by itself. With permission from Yara Yagi, here is the video showing how to fold it.

Tips and suggestions to make this Hollyhock

  • Regular office paper normally used to type letters or make copies is perfect for making this origami flower. If you find this paper in different colors, even better!
  • In addition to making the flower, the video shows how to fold a pentagon. You can skip to minute 2:55 if you already know how to make a pentagon.
  • The first time you make this origami flower, begin your pentagon from  a paper sized 8 x 8 inches (20 x 20 cm) and fold a few of this size to begin with. As the saying goes, practice makes the master.
  • When you become proficient at folding this flower from the larger sized paper, folding with smaller piece of paper will bring more successful results for sure.
  • The leaves are also made from a pentagonal piece of paper. They are shown at the end of the video.
  • For the leaves, use a pentagon a little smaller than used for the flower. But the size is matter of preference. I encourage you to experiment and decide for yourself which size works best for you.

Do try other origami figures that are also made with pentagons.
They make lovely DIY Holiday gifts.

  1. Hi Leyla, you really did an awesome job here. Origami is a great art form with some special skills and beauty. But you made the task so easy. I like flowers, I love to send flowers to my loved one on different occasions and I personally like to send luxury real rose to my friends or family members. Before visiting this lovely webpage, I had no good idea about origami flowers that can be used for gifting anyone. Diving into the details of the method I was really impressed. It’s totally an excellent experience finding me into your beautiful world. The ‘Malva Rosa’ video tutorial is also very useful for learners.
Thank you very much, Leyla, for your brilliant job and of course for sharing this online for your numerous fans and readers.

  2. Thankyou for this vid & Thanks to Yara YagI for sharing this lovely + unique flower!

I have used basic kirigami flowers for gift wrapping before but never a more complex design such as this – it is a wonderful and striking effect. I think the blossom is flat and delicate enough to work for a gift card too :)
    cheers! Beth
