How to Make a Modular Origami Magic Star

Looking for an origami magic star instructions? This magic origami star was the first modular piece I ever made over twenty years ago. I loved it then and it continues to be one of my all-time favorite modular origami models.

Here is why you too will love this Magic Origami Star:

  • The module is simple and very easy to make (It takes less than 30 seconds)
  • Only eight modules are needed to make the star.
  • Assembly is easy, and fast.
  • This star is a toy, one of those fun action origami models. It can be turned into a ring and then into a star again. Magic! Magic! Magic!

Robert Neale, the creator of this origami star, was one of the first to experiment with modular origami long before it became more popular. In addition to being an origami creator, he is an accomplished magicianl.

I’m honored and excited to have Robert’s permission to make this video tutorial showing how to make his classic modular origami star.

Tips and suggestions to make the magic origami star

  • Use paper that is not too thin. Office or photocopy type paper is perfect.
  • Make eight squares each sized approximately 3 x 3 inches (10 x 10 cm).
  • Choose four colors and make two squares with each.
  • Rotated repetition of the pattern will give the finished model a kaleidoscopic look. You could cut the paper squares from similar pages of a catalog or brochure. To do this you need to have eight identical copies of a particular brochure. Alternatively, you can use two sets of four brochures.
  • At the end of the video, learn how to use recycled brochures to make your star!
