Origami at School to Engage, Educate and Entertain

An entertaining hands-on origami presentation for students 1-8
designed to reinforce curriculum concepts that children learn through the school year.


• This fun-filled origami presentation includes step-by-step instructions for playful paper figures.

• Model choices and the number of figures taught are determined by the student’s grade and the length of time allowed for each program.

Students will…

  • Have fun folding a few origami figures.
  • Make connections to curriculum concepts:
    • Math and geometry –Recognize shapes, angles and fractions.
    • Science, Health and Ecology  –Reinforce awareness of the natural world.
    • Social Studies –Recall aspects of world cultures and yearly holidays. 
    • Languages –Practice bilingual vocabulary –English/Spanish .
    • Art –Develop creative new ideas and free associations.
  • Practice listening skills  by following sequences of directions.
  • Enjoy an inspiring display of origami models at the end of the teaching session!

Equipment needed

  • Tables for students to fold paper.
  • A small table to place presentation materials.
  • A table to place display origami models.

Group Size

Students Grades 4 and above: Ideal group size is 20 students, or fewer, per session. This allows for the creation of an atmosphere where all participants can receive personal attention.

Students 1-3: These groups of younger children require more personalized attention and should be 15 or fewer per session.

At least one teacher must be present for all presentations.

Program Fee

• For Schools and libraries located up to 15 miles away from Arlington, VT

$180 for a 50-minute presentation, $150 for each additional, consecutive 50-minute session
–No traveling expenses are charged*.

• For schools and libraries located within 15 and 50 miles from Arlington, VT

$360 for a 50-minute presentation, $175 for each additional, consecutive 50-minute session
Roundtrip trip traveling expenses*

• REDUCED RATES for schools located within 50 miles from Arlington, VT
School programs can be scheduled in half or full school-day blocks. School programs can be scheduled in half or full school-day blocks. Sessions may  be set up in half-hour, 45-minute, or one-hour, with 10 minutes between sessions.

$650 for half day (From 8:45 am to 12 noon)
$950 for full school day (From 8:45 am to 2 pm)
Roundtrip trip travel expenses for schools beyond 15 miles*.

• Programs beyond 50 miles of Arlington, VT:

Program fee of $1,200 per presentation day, plus travel (air fare or mileage) and accommodations for overnight stays if necessary.

The fee includes preparation time and materials.

* Travel Expenses

• $1 per mile, roundtrip beyond 15 miles from Arlington, VT

• Traveling time is charged at the daily rate of $900 per full day if travel to or from your venue occurs on days other than the scheduled program date.

Leyla Torres is a visual artist and writer who uses the art of folding paper as a means to cultivate the creative spirit, as a tool for education and to promote playfulness in everyday life.

Leyla has practiced origami for over twenty five years. She is member of OrigamiUSA and British Origami Society (BOS), organizations dedicated to spreading origami as a educational and recreational activity.

Leyla was guest of honor at the third Conference of Origami in Mexico, 2014 and the Pacific Coast Convention Origami (PCOC) organized by OrigamiUSA, 2015. She has conducted origami workshops at schools, libraries and profesional conferences in the United States, Germany, Holland, England, Colombia and Argentina.

On her popular website, Origami Spirit, Leyla publishes articles related to origami including more than 200 step-by-step instructional origami videos.

Leyla’s past projects include:
• Writing and illustrating children’s books published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux
• Working as a writer and editor of educational programs for book publishers including  Scholastic and McGraw Hill.
• Writing audio descriptions of educational programs and documentaries to make them accessible to people with visual impairments -A project sponsored by the by the US Department of Education.
