Make an Easy Origami Bow-tie Card for Dad

I’d like to share again this traditional origami bow tie previously presented at Origami Spirit, and suggest that it be used it to make a handsome greeting card for Dad on Father’s Day. The bow tie involves only a few folding steps. It can be completed in less than five minutes.

I’m often asked how to make the white collar, so I’ve made the following two-minute video explaining how to make the perfect collar to fit the bow tie. This includes answers to questions of paper size of the collar relative to the scale of the bow tie, and how to make the greeting card.

In addition to Father’s Day this bow-tie model can be used as an event or party invitation. Use your imagination to choose paper patterns and colors. Think about what other occasions this card could be used for.

Keep in mind that creativity in origami –as in other pursuits, is not just about coming up with intricate master pieces out of thin air. Creativity and new ideas come in sizes big and small and is the result of exploration, experimentation, and making new connections between ideas from many sources. This is the artist’s path and practice.

Tips and suggestions for making the origami bow-tie card

  • Use a blank card of 4.5 x 6 inches (15  x 11.5 cm).
  • The origami bow tie is made with a rectangular piece of paper proportioned 2:1.

  • A 6 x 3-inch rectangle will be perfect for making the model for a card.
  • Cut a square piece of paper 6 x 6 inches (15 x 15 cm) in half to make two of the needed rectangles.
  • The finished origami bow tie shows only one side of the paper.
  • It’s not necessary to use paper with a different color on each side.
  • To make the perfect collar for a bow tie made with 6 x 6 inches, use a strip cut from a letter size paper (shown in the video).

  1. Dear Leyla, great !!!! Thank you very much!
That’s always the problem with men and gifts! I have made a favourite in my firefox – also for the next birthday or whatever for colleagues in our office. We often collect money or buy gift cards for special birthdays – and this wrapping is excellent !!!
