Nesting Robin – Tutorial

A model design of Leyla Torres

Origami Nesting Robin designed by Leyla Torres presented on www.origamispirit.com

In this tutorial, you will learn how to make a “Nesting Robin.” This origami figure can be used as a container, perfect for giving chocolate eggs or any other small candy. I first presented and taught this model at the Second Origami World Marathon event. My inspiration for this origami robin comes from having seen robins nesting among the branches of a large rhododendron outside our kitchen window. This lovely bush usually flowers in early June here in Vermont.

Mama robin tends to become easily frightened and anxious so as soon as we notice that she is making her nest, we place a piece of parchment paper on the window so that our little cat, Coco, doesn’t scare her. It’s a delight to watch the nest as it fills with three or four blue eggs.

One year we were able to peep through the parchment screen and watch as little by little the eggs hatched into tiny featherless chicks.

Sometimes the eggs are taken from the nest and we find the remains of the little blue shells somewhere on the lawn. The Robin then abandons the nest and tries again the following year. Unfortunately, there is little we can do to protect the robin’s nest from predators.
