Video Tutorial to Make an Origami Egg-Laying Hen

A few days ago, I received a lovely packet of colorful origami paper. I first thought of trying it on one of my all-time favorite origami models, an Egg-laying Hen, a creation of Zsuzsanna Kricskovics.

Even if you have folded this hen before, it’s always fun to fold and play with. Below you can watch a video tutorial on how to make this origami hen.

This egg-laying origami hen is a wonderful origami action model. It needs a cut at the end, which might be frowned on by some origami purists, but it has never bothered me at all. On the contrary, I think it is indispensable because the section that is cut off is used to make the egg.

After all, doesn’t an egg separate from its hen?

To make the hen we begin by folding a preliminary base. Then, in the end, the resulting egg consists of a tiny preliminary base as well, exactly like the one initially used to fold the hen.

I love that the idea that this egg could conceivably be used to fold another tiny hen, and another microscopic egg, and… so on forever.

It is a fun action paper toy, and a perfect metaphor for the endless egg-hen-egg cycle. If you fold eggs from golden paper then you will have the hen of the ‘golden eggs’.

 I invite you to:

  • Make it (again)
  • Use a paper you have never tried before.
  • Fold it slowly and mindfully.
  • Give or mail it to a friend.
  • Explore it creatively by modifying the angles at which you fold the head and the tail so that you make your own variations.
  • Join our new Origami Spirit Fan Facebook group and share with us this or any of the fold you make –Extra stars if you post a figure learned at OrigamiSpirit!

Tips and suggestions for making Zsuzsanna Kricskovics’s Egg-Laying Origami Hen

  • Any thin and crisp paper is adequate to make this model.  In the video, the hen is demonstrated using a solid-color origami paper*. Practice folding with solid colors before trying patterned origami papers*.
  • You can use regular printer/copy paper* cut in a square.
  • A good paper size to learn the model would be 8×8-inch (20×20cm). Once you have practiced, go ahead and try folding it with a smaller piece of paper such as 6 x 6-inch Kami*.
  • Keep in mind that his paper hen shows both sides of the paper. It is best to use paper with a different color on each side.
  • Once you have folded it a few times, try modifying it by changing the angles of the head and the tail. You will end up with a chattering of hens with unique personalities!
