David Brill’s journey with origami began in childhood when he discovered the extraordinary potential of a simple sheet of paper. The accessibility of the art form, requiring no special tools, captivated him from the start and this attraction has persisted throughout his life.
In the early 1970s, Brill rekindled his passion for origami while working away from home. He immersed himself in the craft, obtaining books and information, some from as far as Japan.
Joining the British Origami Society marked the beginning of his long-standing dedication to the art. Through various contacts and correspondences, he soon found himself part of a global community of like-minded enthusiasts.
For David, the essence of origami lies in its inherent challenges. The artist must navigate seemingly impossible technical hurdles, constrained by the limitations of a square sheet of paper and the unwritten rules of the craft—no cutting, no gluing, no decorating.
Rather than hindering creativity, David found that these restrictions stimulated remarkable solutions, embodying the principle that “restriction yields richness.” Even after decades of folding, he remains intrigued by the endless possibilities within origami, always eager to see and discover new interpretations of familiar subjects and techniques.
At the heart of David’s work is the desire to portray life and movement, particularly in living subjects.
In addition to his passion for origami, David Brill is an accomplished and dedicated oil painter.
