Born in Italy in 1977, Federico Scalambra discovered origami at age eight, sparking a lifelong passion. A member of the Centro Diffusione Origami since 2000, he has also been active in Bologna’s “Le due pieghe” origami group for many years. Federico regularly conducts workshops and organizes exhibitions to promote this ancient paper art.
Federico’s recent work focuses on modular figurative origami, a technique that joins multiple paper sheets of varying sizes using an interlocking system of pockets and flaps—all without glue or scissors. Federico is drawn to this approach for its creative potential and ability to produce intricate, detailed forms.
What particularly captivates him are origami compositions that tell stories, contain subtle mysteries, or evoke emotions and smiles in those who view them.

Federico’s international recognition has led to numerous invitations as a distinguished guest speaker at prestigious origami conventions worldwide. His expertise has been showcased at events organized by the Spanish Origami Association, France’s OORAA organization, the Mexican Origami Association, the Czech Origami Association, OASIS Origami Artists of Israel, and the Origami Deutschland Association. These appearances have established him as a respected voice in the global origami community, where he shares his innovative techniques and artistic philosophy.
In his home country of Italy, Federico has also made significant contributions to the academic understanding of origami’s practical applications. He has been a featured presenter at multiple Italian conferences dedicated to exploring the educational and instructional dimensions of paper folding. Through these platforms, he demonstrates how origami develops spatial reasoning, mathematical thinking, and creative problem-solving skills in learners of all ages, further cementing his reputation as both an artist and an educator committed to advancing the appreciation and utility of this ancient art form.
