A model design of Leyla Torres & Julio Salcedo
How to fold Corazón and Corbatín, Heart and Bowtie Origami Bookmarks
This tutorial guides you through folding two unique origami bookmarks: the Heart (Corazón) and Bowtie (Corbatín).
I’m thrilled to present these elegant yet simple bookmarks, which introduce you to the “Close Sink” technique—a fold that tucks a point inward to create a shape that is locked and secure.
This bookmark model is related to other animal models available on Origami Spirit and to flat models, too. Be sure to check out these collections for fun origami model suggestions to fold and share.
Origins and Inspiration
The design is inspired by a cat head model designed by Colombian origami artist Julio Salcedo. I’ve adapted his 2:1 paper ratio cat head into a bookmark by using a 1:4 strip, incorporating heart and bowtie elements for a distinctive look.
Tips for Folding Success
- This flat design is ideal for mailing in a standard envelope.
- Use thin, crisp paper, such as kami paper (featured in the video), for best results.
- For your first attempt, start with paper strips cut from at least an 8 x 8-inch (20 x 20 cm) sheet.

Think about how to photograph and present your finished model. Here are some practical PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS:
- Use natural light. Place your model near a window.
- Daylight is your friend. Overcast days are ideal as there are few shadows!
- Make sure the background behind the image is uncluttered and color-neutral. No patterns!
- Avoid reflective surfaces, unless reflections are part of the photo composition.
- Experiment!
- Share your results with us!
- Have fun!
