Designed and demonstrated by Linda MacFarlane

Meet the cutest Highland Coo, an easy-to-make origami design created by Linda Macfarlane that captures the whimsical spirit of Scotland’s iconic shaggy cattle. This delightful paper-folding animal is perfect for origami enthusiasts of all skill levels, from beginners looking for their next fun challenge to experienced folders seeking a quick and rewarding creation.

A Versatile Origami Design for Every Occasion

Whether you prefer a pocket-sized version or a larger statement piece, this versatile Highland cow design adapts beautifully to different paper sizes. Fold a miniature herd using 3-inch squares for adorable gift toppers and party decorations, or scale up to larger paper for an impressive display piece that showcases the intricate details of this beloved Scottish breed. The adjustable sizing makes this origami project ideal for classroom activities, personal collections, or gifts for friends and family.

Add Festive Holiday Charm

For an extra touch of festive charm, the tutorial shows you how to top your Highland Coo with a tiny Santa hat, transforming this Scottish symbol into a delightful holiday decoration that’s sure to bring smiles. This optional addition makes the Highland Coo perfect for Christmas cards, seasonal gift tags, or festive table settings. The contrast between the traditional Scottish cattle and the cheerful Santa hat creates a unique fusion that celebrates both heritage and holiday spirit.

Materials Needed

Creating your Highland Coo origami is simple and requires minimal supplies:

  • Body: Two squares 6 x 6 inches (15 x 15 cm). Any color of your preference – traditional browns and blacks work beautifully, but feel free to experiment with creative colors.
  • Head: Half-square triangle (Cut a 6 x 6 inch square from corner to corner. We will use one of those halves.)
  • Santa Hat (Optional): One square 6 x 6 inches (15 x 15 cm). Red on one side and white on the reverse for authentic festive coloring.

Tips for Success

For best results, use origami paper or any medium-weight paper that holds creases well. Textured or patterned paper can add visual interest and create the illusion of the Highland cow’s distinctive shaggy coat. If you’re making the Santa hat, duo-colored paper (also called kami) with red and white sides will give you the most authentic look without any additional coloring needed.

Perfect for Gift-Giving and Display

Once completed, your origami Highland Coo makes a thoughtful, handmade gift that celebrates Scottish culture and craftsmanship. Display your finished creation on a desk, shelf, or windowsill, or attach it to greeting cards and gift packages for a personal touch. The three-dimensional structure allows the Highland Coo to stand on its own, making it a charming addition to any space
