Make a Rainbow of Origami Butterflies

Do you like origami butterflies? What about origami boxes? Let’s then combine these two model concepts and see what we get!

This origami butterfly opens into a box. It’s perfect for a note to your sweetheart or maybe to mom on her birthday or mother’s day.

When I see butterflies I think of the warm sweet smelling slopes of the Andes mountains in my native country, Colombia. I also remember Mauricio Babilonia being swarmed by yellow butterflies in Gabriel García Márquez’s book, One Hundred Years of Solitude.

What memories does a butterfly bring up to you?

In Chinese culture, two butterflies flying together symbolize love.  In Japan, they are seen as the soul of a person; whether the person is alive or dead.

To design this origami butterfly, I was inspired by an origami heart box created by Francis Ow. Here is the video tutorial to make the origami butterfly-box.

Tips and Suggestions for the Origami Butterfly-Box

  • The butterfly is made with a rectangular piece of paper in the proportion of 2:1
  • Use paper with different color on each side.
  • Kami paper is used in the video demonstration. This is a perfect paper to make this butterfly.
  • Cut in a half a square of  paper 6 x 6 inches (15 x 15 cm) to obtain two of the desired rectangles.
  • Go ahead, make yourself a rainbow of origami butterflies!

  1. Der Schmetterling mit dem Schächtelchen ist wunderbar. Etwas Besonderes! Danke für die gewohnt ausführliche und verständliche Erklärung! Lediglich die letzten kleinen Faltungen von der Rückseite her sind noch etwas übungsbedürftig.
