How to Make a Lovely Paper Butterfly in Less Than 6 Minutes

Here in the Northern Hemisphere, when winter approaches to hold us in its grip, spring can always be in our hearts––and at any time of year––a perfect time to make this adorable origami butterfly!

I am very excited to present this new paper butterfly, designed by my friend and much admired origami designer, Evi Binzinger. This model is a lovely addition to many other beautiful origami insects already shown here on Origami Spirit: a dragonfly, a bee , a fly, a swallow tail butterfly, and a butterfly messenger.

Evi’s butterfly is one of those simple yet elegant models that you end up folding over and over again. I can picture her butterfly model as a decorative addition to a simple origami box that might be used to hold a gift at Christmas; for a birthday or Mother’s Day, or for Valentine’s day. The list of possibilities is endless!

Evi has dedicated this butterfly to her cat, Teresa, who took good care of her litter of hungry sick kittens in the deep cold of winter even though she was very sick herself. This mother cat and her little family had been living in an dirty and drafty open shed when Eve found and rescued them. It’s wonderful to say that they all survived!

Many thanks to Evi for giving permission to present the “Teresa Butterfly” in this step-by-step video.

Tips and suggestions for making the origami butterfly

  • Use any paper that is thin and firm. Kami paper is perfect. Copy paper and Tant paper are excellent too.
  • In the video, the butterfly is demonstrated using kami paper –7 x 3.5 inches (18 x 9 cm)
  • Cut a square in half to make two rectangles for two butterflies.
  • The finished butterfly shows only one side of the paper. You can use paper with two sides of the same or different colors.
  • To custom-color paper for this butterfly, follow the instructions and tutorial shown in this post.

  1. Thank you, Leyla for making me feel happy for a few minutes while I look at the origami models you make. I always think “I’m going to do that” but I never do. My craft room desk is covered with unfinished projects, sadly. I know I need to tackle it any spare time I have but I know soon I will do it because it’s important to do things that make you happy.
