Three Origami Figures to Celebrate the Spirit of Summer!

I love summer! Do you love summer too?

I have been enjoying the summer here in Vermont this year. It is a place that is my home, and always a source of great pleasure. With almost nine months of cold or freezing weather during the other three seasons, and having been born in a tropical country, these short and warm summer months are such a welcome change.

Summer and our origami practice bring us peace and relaxation so I’d like to feature three origami models that conjure for me that feeling of summer and the joy of carefree times: strawberries, sunflowers, and butterflies!

Even if you have folded these models before, try them again. Our origami practice brings us the sense of joy and relaxation, feelings that come through simplicity, familiarity, and repetition.

Origami Strawberries

These lovely origami strawberries, designed by David Donahue, can easily replace those freshly-picked ones.

Origami Sunflower

This origami sunflower, of my creation, features twenty-four petals, attached to each other at the center. For me is a good substitute for the real ones. No matter how I care for the seeds I plant, those mischievous chipmunks raid my garden and feast on the seeds!

Origami Butterfly

This is an easy-to-fold origami butterfly designed by Evi Binzinger. I have zinnias planted in my garden–which survived the chipmunks–and they happen to attract many butterflies. The zinnias are blossoming and the butterflies are fluttering!

Keep calm and keep on folding!

  1. Hi Leyla. Can you please tell me more about the summer in Vermont? The current monthly design challenge theme on The Origami Forum is “summer”, but it seems to be related particularly to going to the beach. Living here in Bogota, I don’t think I relate anything to the summer; I don’t even know if we have a summer-time. I believe winter-time is the rainy season here in Bogotá, but that’s it… and I’m not sure if that’s at the end of the year or when. I like learning about other places, that’s why I ask : )

    • Summer in Vermont is like being in a small Colombian town at about 1200 to 1800 meters of altitude.
That means the temperature is about 24 to 30 celsius depending on the time of day.

Here in Vermont, summer nights tend to be fresh and there is no need for air conditioner or fan, except for a few nights in July or August.
People enjoy swimming in lakes or rivers, also canoeing and tubing. There is a large lake between Vermont and New York State called Lake Champlain. People can take cruises around the lake. Since it is a mountainous region, some of the ski resorts offer summer mountain toboggans. Taking hikes is very popular. Vermont does not have an ocean coastline.
To make an analogy, think of the weather in a town like Sasaima or La Mesa in Colombia.
