This charming origami buffalo, designed by Yara Yagi (Brasil) is an action model, a perfect little bovine to celebrate the Year of the Ox.

This origami Buffalo was created as part of a friendly competition to design a simple model using triangular-shaped paper. Yara’s use of a single square cut into two identical triangles is ingenious. I modified some angles and added minor folds to the body piece so that it is more stable to hold the head, and there is a suggestion of legs and a rump.

Tips and suggestions for making the Buffalo

  • Thin and crisp paper is ideal to use for this buffalo. I have had success with kami and a paper slightly thicker than kami.
  • In the video, the buffalo is demonstrated using a paper slightly thicker than kami.
  • Use a piece of paper that’s at least 6 x 6 inches (15 x 15 cm.) when you make this model for the first time. You will need to cut the square diagonally to make two triangles, one for the body and one for the head.
  • Both sides of the paper show on the face. If each side has a different color, the color difference will enhance the features of the buffalo.
