In German folklore–especially in North German mythology–an elf is considered and portrayed as a supernatural being. The Christmas elf appeared in literature as early as 1850 when Louisa May Alcott completed an unpublished book with the title Christmas Elves.

At Christmas time In the United States, Canada, Great Britain, and Ireland, the modern legend of Santa Claus typically includes Santa’s diminutive elf assistants dressed in green with pointy ears and pointy hats.
