How to Make an Origami Shamrock –It’s a dish too!

This origami model is related in design to the Hollow Petal Flower previously presented here on Origami Spirit (updated video coming soon). The design of this model is that of a three leafed plant commonly known as a Shamrock.

A Shamrock (Clover or trefoil) is a traditional Irish symbol. According to legend the shamrock symbol was used by Saint Patrick, patron saint of Ireland, to illustrate the concept of the Holy Trinity.

Saint Patrick’s Day is observed on March 17th, the date of Saint Patrick’s death. It is celebrated inside and outside Ireland as a religious and cultural holiday.

I designed this shamrock origami model a few years ago. It took me a while to develop an easy-to-follow folding process and I think I’ve finally managed to do that. I’m very happy to share my origami Shamrock model with you in the following video.

Tips and suggestions for making the origami shamrock

  • If you are just beginning your adventure in the art of paper folding I suggest practicing first by folding the traditional crane or the flapping bird before attempting the origami shamrock.
  • Thin and crisp paper is ideal to use for this shamrock.
  • In the video the shamrock model is demonstrated using thin kami paper. In the U.S. kami is known as “origami paper”.
  • Use a piece of paper that’s at least 9 x 9 inches (24cm.) to make this origami shamrock.
  • Only one side of the paper shows in the front. It is not necessary to have paper colored differently on each side.
  • For a flat shamrock use paper that’s white on one side and green on the other (see flat model at minute 9:32 of the video).
  • As with the Hollow Petal Flower the shamrock can be used as a candy dish.

  1. Leyla, what a great model! I’m sure, open for all sorts of variations.
You are right, it can be difficult and important to develop an easy-to-follow folding sequence – and that’s why your videos are so great. Best, Hans.
