Making Origami on a Sunday Afternoon – An artist collaboration

In the first few days of this year, I received an email from two Los Angeles-based songwriters proposing an artistic collaboration.

They had recently recorded a song for a new album due to be released on February 16, 2024, and wanted me to create some visuals to accompany the launch. The title of their song? Origami. That they contacted me was one of those wonderful serendipitous opportunities that come around once in a while.

Rand and Jason are an Indie Future duo recording under the label Limón Limón. They found me online and while they weren’t specific about what exactly they were looking, for they had a few guideline suggestions.

  • A time-lapse origami video sequenced to the rhythm of their music
  • An origami tutorial that included their song in the background
  • An interview video where we discuss art and music

I was swamped with work and since even a short 3-minute video can take quite a bit of time I wasn’t too enthusiastic. At least initially.

But John loved the tune and kept gently encouraging me saying it had a catchy summer-romance-Jersey-shore feel to it. He also reminded me that I had enough material already to do a video so I didn’t have to start this project from the very beginning.

Little by little I got into it. Within a relatively short time, I cobbled together a visual storyline based on the lyrics, clips I’d kept from other projects over the years, and some recent material including Natalia Bacerra-Cano’s exquisite petal heart and a beautiful still image from a lovely friend, Heather, who incorporated origami into her last year’s Halloween costume as ‘A Beautiful Day.’

We hope you enjoy the result of our collaboration with Rand and Jason and look forward to sharing, in the near future, a recorded conversation between Rand, Jason, John, and myself about this project.

ORIGAMI – Lyrics

Limón Limón

Sitting by myself,
Staring at the sky,
Hearing all the people all the people passing by.

Weekend at the park,
Losing track of time,
Got you on my, got you my mind.

Daydream you and me,
So much I can see,
Like we’re 17,
And young forever.

Sunshine grass is green,
Springtime in the breeze,
Make-believe memories,
Of us together.

Made an origami on a Sunday afternoon.
Hoping it’ll tell me everything ‘bout you…

’bout you, ’bout you…

Wonder if i got a…
Future with you.

Made an origami on a Sunday afternoon.
Hoping it’ll tell me everything ‘bout you.

If you were here right now,
I’d be in the clouds,
Nothing in the world could ever bring me down.

But If I have to wait,
I could pass the days,
Imagining the way you’ll say my name.

Daydream, you and me,
So much, I can see,
Like we’re 17,
And young forever.

Sunshine, grass is green,
Springtime in the breeze,
Make believe memories
Of us together.

Made an origami on a Sunday afternoon.
Hoping it’ll tell me everything ‘bout you…

’bout you, ’bout you…

Wonder if i got a…
Future, with you.

Made an origami on a Sunday afternoon.
Hoping it’ll tell me everything ‘bout you.

Made an origami on a Sunday afternoon.
Hoping it’ll tell me everything ‘bout you…

’bout you, ’bout you…

Wonder if I got a,
Future, with you.
